If you want to be a fashion designer the place to start is by getting a degree. In most cases a bachelors in fashion design will be the minimum requirement to enter the field. Even then you will likely have to start with a different job and work your way into being a designer. Very few people start out as designers, there are just too many people competing for too few jobs for that to happen.

Ideally any bachelor's degree in fashion design should also include a coop program. This isn't critical but it will make it much easier to find a job when the time comes. Very few companies hire designers off the street. They usually promote people from within to fill the job. The best way to get your foot in the door is to work with a design company during a coop period. If you can find a degree program that offers that opportunity you should definitely take advantage of it.
You are also going to want to put some thought into where you are going to take your bachelors in fashion design. In the past the only option was at the fashion design schools but this has started to change. Nowadays you can take a degree at most regular colleges as well. This greatly increases your options. There are positives and negatives to both options so you will need to think about your options. Whichever you choose the one thing that you have to make sure of is that the school you choose is accredited properly.
